Can I get a green card without giving up my British and Australian passport?
Hi,
I am lucky enough to have a British and AUstralian passport and am thinking of moving to New York - however I do not want to give up either of these passports!! Will they make me?
No you do not give up your passport just because you get a greencard to live here in the USA. A greencard just means that you are a Permanent Resident of the United States but that you are still a citizen of another country and you must use the other country's passport anytime that you leave the USa and return to the USa along with showing your greencard.
You are subject to the laws of the other country when you travel outside of USA to visit another country on vacation.
Also as a permanent residen of the USa with a greencard you are not allowed to leave and enter the USa as often as you wish. that privelige is allowed only to UNited States Citizens. To be a permanent reasident means that you must show that you are willing to live here and stay here and not go back to the old country constantly and for months at a time and then return to USA for temporary short visits.
I think you are allowed to leave once every two years for a period not lasting more than three months while you are a permanent resident of USA with a greencard.
Again you do not give up your own country's passport but you must maintain a current unexpired passport of your country of origin and it must be renewed at the proper times.
